Original Oil Painting by Laguna Beach, California Listed Artist Ruth Peabody. Circa 1920
Beautiful original oil on canvas by the talented Laguna Beach listed artist Ruth Peabody (1898-1966) in it's original carved quality California frame. This substantial and beautifully executed impressionist painting is rich in colors which are still very crisp and bright. The wide brush strokes used to paint the blossoms and the many interesting vertical lines creating the background or wall, make the painting very pleasing to view. This painting is fresh to the market and in original, untouched condition. The original paper label on the reverse, written by hand, reads: "Zinnias", Ruth Peabody, 3.00. There is scattered paint loss on the quality frame and one tiny fleck of paint missing on the painting just above the garden shears which is only approximately 3/32" square. The paint, throughout, is not cracking, however, and is very intact. The missing piece was in an area painted black and could easily be colored in or touched-up with paint. The painting does not appear to have ever been cleaned and is free of repairs. The canvas measures 28" tall by 35" wide, the frame measures 33 /12" tall by 40 1/2" wide. Ruth Peabody (Ruth Eaton Colburn Peabody), the daughter and pupil of Eleanor Colburn, was born in Highland Park, Illinois in 1898 and first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to Laguna Beach, California with her mother in 1924 . She established a studio and taught privately and at the Laguna High School. She is known for her abstracts and flowers. While it is written that Ruth Peabody specialized in garden and flower subjects after the 1940's, judging from the frame and canvas, this floral appears to have been painted earlier. She died in Laguna Beach on October 22, 1966. She is listed in Dawdy (2), Fieldings(4), Hughes (4), Mallet (1), Moore (2), Samuels (2) and Whos (3). Member: Laguna Beach AA;Calif.
